"crystal structure"

Stainless Steel - Recycled Metal - Acrylic

The idea behind the design....

Project Location: 6700 Alameda St. Huntington Park, Ca 90021

This modular 3 piece sculpture was designed to be visually exciting to the eye as well as carry on a theme which represents Union Central Cold Storage's company history as an ice making and cold storage facility. The design is based on one of the basic crystalline structures of ice, which is hexagonal. The use of materials, stainless steel and colored art glass, are used to represent the reflective, translucent, and prismatic character inherent to this material (ice). The glass panels are located on the top faces of all 3 sculptures. As the daylight passes thru, they create patterns and interesting shadows within the interior of each sculpture- which change as the day progresses. There are "windows", or "cutaways" on the facade of the stainless steel sculptures, which reveal machine parts, gears, tubing, as well as other parts that were taken from Union Central's old ice making building at the old building location. All these recycled parts were used in the creation of ice, or refrigeration. Many of the parts are over 100 years old and rusted and worn, providing an interesting juxtaposition from the sleek and reflective outside surface. The underlying theme is the "old within the new" or "the parts make the whole."

The sculpture is designed to be safe for public areas. Welds and sharp edges of metal corners and other areas are rounded and ground smooth to prevent any possibility of injury.

Detail of recycled parts inside large sculpture - most of the recycled parts are cast iron, which cannot be welded to stainless steel, therefore every part needed to be assembled by compression fittings- which were accomplished by inserting round metal pipes(which held the parts in place) which are then held in place by inserting each end inside square stainless tubing.

Some of the equipment necessary for this project included: a mig welder with a tri gas mix (for stainless steel), a plasma cutter with an attached nitrogen bottle, angle grinders for grinding welds and polishing sheet metal surfaces, metal chop saw, and a metal band saw, and over 1500 pounds of stainless steel tubing (square) in various dimensions.

Wanted to especially thank my wife, Shannan, for putting up with me and my months of working late nights and weekends on this project, as well as my father in law John, who allowed me space in his warehouse (which had a crane) to construct this large sculpture. Without their support this project could not have been possible.
